Welcome to 7th Grade Read 180!

This is my 22nd year teaching Special Education here at Wall Intermediate School. I graduated from Monmouth University with a bachelors degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. I have two children named Christian and Cameron. In my spare time you can find me at the beach, playing sports or spending time with my family.

I am dedicated to making this year busy and productive for all of my students. An effective way of making it a great year is to communicate often. Parental communication is very important to a successful education, and by keeping in touch, we will achieve this.

Course Overview

Current Workshop: No Ordinary Sport

Focus Question: What can happen when athletes challenge themselves in extreme ways?

What’s significant about No Ordinary Sport?

Many people enjoy participating in sports, but extreme athletes take sports to a new level. These athletes perform daredevil stunts to test their personal and emotional endurance. From free climbing in Yosemite to urban acrobatics, extreme athletes form a fearless breed of their own. The athletes described in this Workshop are exhilarated by the challenges of what they do, but are the rewards of their sports worth the risks?

The Workshop Arc

In this Workshop, students will explore extreme sports that have developed cult followings among young people. The first text provides readers with background information on what motivates extreme athletes. A nonfiction drama follows in which students are introduced to real-life free climbers who successfully reached the top of El Capitan using only their hands, feet, and bodies. The Workshop continues with a three-part news article centered on the benefits and risks of Tough Mudder, a hardcore obstacle course. Students end the Workshop by reading a final news article about parkour—a fast-paced sport that blends acrobatics and gymnastics. Throughout the Workshop, students assess whether the risks of extreme sports outweigh the benefits.

Read 180 information:

Read 180 is a course with an emphasis on reading comprehension and writing skills. The Read 180 program is a specialized curriculum using whole group instruction, small group instruction, individualized computer components, and independent reading rotations to assist in improving reading and comprehension skills.

Read 180 session begins with the whole class working together with the teacher. Then, the class breaks up into small groups. Each group takes a turn reading independently, working independently on chromebooks and working together in teacher-led small groups. At the end of the session, the whole class comes together again, with the teacher, to wrap up the day.

Students are required to read twice a week for 20 minutes. They will need to have a parent, guardian or teacher sign a reading log each week and turn it in on Friday. For each log they complete, they will receive Campisi Cash. They may do more than twice a week for extra Campisi Cash!

Read 180 Software:
Your child will be logging into the Read 180 software for multiple purposes. They will login through Clever in order to access this software.

Learning Ally:
Learning Ally provides a collection of 65,000 digitally recorded textbooks and literature titles.
Log in through the app in Clever.

Google Classroom:
The primary purpose of Google Classroom is to streamline the process of sharing files between teachers and students. *Students will be required to check Google Classroom every day for assignments and announcements.
