About Me

Welcome; I'm Mrs. Pine!

After graduating from The College of New Jersey with a degree in English, Secondary Education, I joined the Wall Intermediate School staff in 2011.

I LOVE to read and talk about books, and I look forward to the great year of reading and writing we have ahead of us.

Course Description

This course will cover the 6th grade NJSLA English Language Arts standards, including reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Comprehension and appreciation of various literature types are taught through the study of fiction and nonfiction texts. Students will also develop skills in narrative, research-based information, literary analysis, and argumentative writing styles.

Grading Policies

SCORING

There are 3 categories of assessment in ELA:

Major assessments [Worth 40%]
Minor assessments [Worth 35%]
Independent assessments [Worth 25%]

Grades are broken down as follows:

A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 59% and below

MAKEUP/LATE WORK:

Most assignments are submitted to Google Classroom; be sure to click TURN IN anytime on the due date!
For every day out, students have the same number of days to make up work. Students should consult the teacher or the Due Dates document on Google Classroom [Stream tab] for assignments given during their absence.
Units in ELA become more complex as they progress; earlier assignments help prepare students for later, more complex assignments. For this reason, students are expected to turn work in on time. If there is a specific issue with meeting a deadline, the student should reach out the teacher for support.

EXTRA CREDIT:

There are no extra credit assignments in ELA 6. There are a number of grades entered each marking period [independent, minor, and major assessments]. As these assignments tie directly to the goals of the unit/course, they should be the focus of students' time and effort.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

All work you submit must be your own. You should not:

Copy someone's work/information from a website word-for-word or with a few words changed. [This is plagiarism!]
Turn in work that someone else completed for you.
Look at/Copy from someone else's work during an assessment.

AI Policy

Critical thinking is a core skill in ELA. Your work should reflect YOUR thinking, YOUR ideas.

While technology can enhance work that you complete/create [e.g. to find sources, create citations, check for plagiarism, check spelling/grammar, make study materials], it should not be used to create assessed tasks.

The teacher will let students know if/when the use of AI is appropriate for an assignment [beyond what is listed above].

Students are required to disclose any AI tools they use for any assignments, including:

Tool name [e.g. ChatGPT]
Prompt/Question [If used]
Date of generation

Violations of any part of this policy will be treated the same as other instances of academic dishonesty.

In ELA 6, students will be assigned books; selecting from a list of books to read during book clubs; AND engaging in independent reading. Independent reading affords students the opportunity to read books of THEIR choosing.

This means that a well-stocked class library is a critical resource in an ELA classroom.

If you are interested in helping to build Mrs. Pine's ELA 6 classroom library -- in providing your child, their peers, and future students with access to as many high-interest, age-appropriate books as possible -- I would be extremely grateful for your support! Please feel free to donate any Middle Grade books that are not being used at home; alternatively, you can visit the sites below for suggestions!
