What’s significant about Stand Up?

In 1959, in response to the fact that children’s basic human rights were being violated around the world, the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. Since then, many people have worked to improve the lives of children in need. Three of the children who were helped are now leading efforts to improve the lives of less fortunate children in several areas around the world.

The Workshop Arc

The Workshop begins by introducing the Children’s Bill of Rights. Four texts that follow showcase young people who overcame traumatic childhood experiences and went on to stand up for the rights of children. Chris “Kesz” Valdez works to help homeless children, Malala Yousafzai fights for education rights for girls, and James Kofi Annan has devoted his life to abolishing child slavery. The Workshop concludes with a poem that explores the themes of freedom and equal rights for all people.

For homework, students are required to read twice a week for 20 minutes. They will need to have a parent, guardian or teacher sign a reading log each week and turn it in on Friday. For each log they complete, they will receive Warner Bucks. They may do more than twice a week for extra Warner Bucks.
